Write to your Councillors for climate action!

Winning slowly on climate is still losing.
Demand stronger action now.
Australia’s carbon targets are not sufficient to limit global warming to 1.5 °C.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report released in August 2021 states, ‘it is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land’, and ‘human-induced climate change is already affecting many weather and climate extremes in every region across the globe’.
The report shows that each fraction of a degree, and tonne of carbon dioxide, matters. More warming means more frequent and more intense heatwaves, dangerously heavy rain, and droughts. Choices made now will determine our future climate.
What can you do?
Email your Mayor and Councillors and ask them act on climate, and to call on your Federal representatives to act on climate.

If a Councillor puts the motion on the agenda, registering to speak at your Council meeting is very effective and shows the Councillors there is community support. Call your Council or check their website for details.

Further information
The IPCC motions have been checked by a climate scientist and several Councillors. I am very grateful to all of the people who have helped with this website and the motions – especially to Councillor Heyde from Hornsby Council, who passed a similar motion the week before this was released and allowed me to use the slightly altered background information from her motion.
Our Councils are a powerful lever for climate action. Already, pledged commitments from Australian Councils ‘would bring Australia 96% of the way to meet its current target of 28% reduction by 2030.’ But even more emission reduction is possible – less than half of the Councils in Australia have community targets.
The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is ‘a global initiative to phase out fossil fuels and support a just transition’. This has been endorsed by thirteen cities and sub-national Governments, including the ACT, the City of Sydney, the City of Yarra, the City of Moreland, the City of Los Angeles, and the City of Barcelona. Please ask your Councillors to endorse this treaty.
Ask your Council to join the Cities Power Partnership, the Race to Zero emissions, and the Race to Resilience.
The Snapshot Tool can be used to see the emission breakdown of your LGA.
More information on how to lobby your Council can be found at the following: Local Government Climate Emergency Toolkit, Council and community Action in the Climate Emergency, CEDEMIA, and Beyond Zero Emissions Zero Carbon Communities.
If you need help to rewrite the motion to suit your LGA, please get in touch.
About Me
I’m not a member of any political party. I’ve self-funded this website. This website is not affiliated with any group, including those mentioned within the motion or text. I’ve been watching and learning about Council policy for several years now. I’ve had some wins with my local Council, getting funding for infrastructure that is crucial for decarbonising, and advocating for improved policy during consultations. After the IPCC WGI release, I wanted my Councillors to demand stronger climate action from the Federal government. I decided to create this site to make it easier for other like-minded people to ask their Councillors to do the same.
Privacy Policy
We will not share your personal information with anyone. We will collect anonymised information about the number of constituents in each LGA that requested their Councillors put up a motion, and if there is sufficient number will write a media release. If an opportunity arises in the future to run a similar campaign of coordinated motions, we will contact you via email (but you may, of course, unsubscribe at any time).
