If your Council has not yet joined the Cities Power Partnership, or set aside funds for decarbonisation, consider adding these points to the email (before the motion so the Councillors can see them!):
- Note that other LGAs have saved money through actions such as bulk buying renewable energy, installing LED lights, installing solar panels on Council assets, and more, and that our LGA could materially benefit from climate action;
- Call on the Mayor to write a letter asking to join the Cities Power Partnership, which is a free program aimed providing resources and networks for local government to increase the benefits of climate action for locals;
If you live in an area with an ambitious climate plan, consider adding this amendment to your email (again, include it at the top so the Councillors notice it!):
- Note that Council’s emissions reductions targets for its community and its own operations will need to be reviewed in light of the latest IPCC science on keeping temperatures at 1.5 degrees or less of warming;
If your Council has declared a climate emergency, you could add these points:
- Reaffirm the declaration of a Climate Emergency made in {Month Year} and note the continued need for urgent action by all levels of government, including local government;
- In keeping with this declaration, will ensure that emission reduction actions are supported in all future strategies, the next Council Plan and budgetary processes, appropriate climate and sustainability KPIs in the CEOs contract, and bring forward the community net zero target to 2030 {change according to current community target/ability. If Council operations target is after 2030, request that it be brought forward};
- Seek a report back to the next meeting investigating how the Council can enter a full climate emergency mode as recommended by CACE (Council and community Action in the Climate Emergency)
